In addition to fine rib, double rib is one of SCHIESSER’s two original fabrics. With the onset of innovative flat and circular knitting machines and new needle systems, it was possible to manufacture elastic fabrics in 1923. It was based on the process of manufacturing hosiery; this technology was how stocking cuffs were made. In this case, two purls always alternate with two knit stitches. The result: a robust two-rowed rib texture.
After years of stiff and unyielding knitwear, double rib underwear was a real blessing! For the first time, the material made it possible to move while still remaining close against the skin. Thanks to its dual-knit texture, it offers plenty of stretch, breathability and absorbs moisture. This was and is particularly advantageous, especially during physical activity.
Due to its high elasticity, double rib is particularly suitable for pure fabrics, such as 100% cotton. A small percentage of spandex ensures even more so that the fabric retains its shape, so that your clothes remain in perfect shape even after washing. In addition, modal has also proven itself a good fiber for double-rib underwear. This material makes the fabric especially supple and has a light, elegant sheen. Add some decorative elements such as lace to women’s lingerie and it becomes a fashionably elegant favorite.
As such, we at SCHIESSER use double rib in a variety of areas: as daywear or sleepwear, for women, men and children. In addition to classics such as the double-rib undershirt or men’s underpants with fly-front, we also like to use this robust fabric in our current collections, first and foremost at Revival.
It’s here that you can clearly see how such an iconic piece of underwear is still up-to-date today and how well underwear history can be combined with current trends.
