Schiesser Underwear ABCs

What’s the difference between fine rib and single jersey?  What does silk finish mean and what exactly is TENCELTM?  You can learn all that and much more by checking out our Underwear ABCs – from A to Z, tucks, yarn and everything in between.

Stretch

Stretch elastic fabrics, which get their elasticity from the admixture of elastane. The resilience of elastane allows the fabrics or threads to return to their original position after stretching and prevents bulging of the affected areas. Garments made from this fit snugly to the body and offer optimum comfort of movement due to their perfect fit.

Sun protection factor (SPF)

During the swimming season it is important to protect our skin from harmful UV rays.  In addition to sunscreen, swimwear also plays a decisive role in sun protection. This can be done, for example, by using a very dense fabric through which the sun’s rays cannot reach the skin, or using the color of a fabric.  Light-colored clothing reflects the light and functions as a kind of soft protective shield, so to speak.

At SCHIESSER all bathing products are subject to strict tests and meet all standards for sunlight protection.  All children’s products of the popular “Aqua” series have been awarded a 40+ factor, so that even our very smallest children can fully enjoy the summer with SCHIESSER.

Sweatware

The English term sweatware has little to do with its literal translation from today’s perspective: The “sweatshirt” as it’s called, became popular in the 80s and served as a long-sleeved cotton T-shirt and as the top of a jogging suit.

Synthetic fibers

Synthetic fibers are synthetically produced fibers that are used throughout the textile industry.  In the lingerie sector, this group includes, for example, elastane, polyamide or polypropylene. The great advantage of such a synthetic fiber is that it produces a completely pure, strictly tested end product that promises the highest comfort for daily use. Unlike many natural fibers, synthetic fibers are subject to such stringent testing procedures that they will never cause allergic reactions or other negative effects on the skin.  Synthetic fibers from SCHIESSER are therefore completely harmless, especially for goods as close to the skin as underwear, since all materials used comply with the Oeko-Tex Standard 100.

Tactel

Tactel is a synthetic fiber from the polyamide family.  Compared to conventional polyamides, DuPont’s registered trademark is even softer and silkier and therefore is very popular especially in the underwear sector. SCHIESSER uses Tactel mainly in daywear, where its light weight, soft texture and excellent care properties make it the ideal fabric for fine underwear.
Whether in body-hugging shorts, delicate lingerie or as decoration in lace or ribbons, all products with Tactel content are subject to strict testing procedures at SCHIESSER and all comply with the Oeko-Tex Standard 100, so that you can always be sure that you will not feel anything but the best SCHIESSER quality on your Skin.

Tencel

TENCEL™ is an industrially manufactured cellulose fibre from the company Lenzing AG, also known under the technical term lyocell. As the world’s leading producer of lyocell, the company has attached great value to handling natural resources in a responsible manner since the 1990s. TENCEL™ consists of beech and spruce fibres from FSC and PEFC-certified and controlled forests in Europe, as well as eucalyptus wood from South African plantations. Once crushed very fine, this cellulose mix is broken down with non-toxic solvents and water and processed to TENCEL™ fibres over multiple manufacturing steps.

Due to the closed cycle of materials, this manufacturing process is particularly sustainable and significantly less environmentally harmful than the production of comparable cellulose fibres. Water consumption is also 20x lower than in cotton processing.

Terry cloth fabric

Terry is a soft, voluminous fabric that gets its soft character from a special effect yarn.  Loose and taut threads are twisted together, resulting in a loop-like surface.  This special weave structure gives the fabric high strength combined with very low weight. Terry cloth can be made of natural fibers such as cotton or synthetic fibers such as polyester.  The major advantage of using synthetically produced yarns is that the material is even lighter, stronger and, above all, more durable than the 100% use of natural fibers.

Thread

Thread is a continuous, linear textile structure. It is made from discontinuous fibers of limited length by spinning or produced by twisting multiple continuous filaments together. The type of thread used has a decisive influence on the fabric properties in terms of appearance (uniformity), serviceability (resistance to abrasion, tearing, creasing, seams) and wear properties (absorbency, softness, suppleness).

Corespun thread

A Corespun thread is a continuous filament, such as Lycra®/Dorlastan®, that is spun together with staple fibers, such as cotton, wool, linen or silk.

Trevira

Trevira is a synthetic fiber from the polyester family that is particularly easy to care for and retains its shape.  Trevira is used by SCHIESSER particularly in the sports sector, as the material dries quickly and absorbs moisture very well.
As with all the raw materials used, products containing Trevira are also subject to strict quality standards at SCHIESSER.  All textiles comply with the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 so you can always rest assured that you feel nothing but best, tested SCHIESSER quality on your skin.

Tucks

Tucks are narrow, ironed folds that are used as decorative elements for underwear. Tucks are often used in groups with two or three parallel rows to achieve a particularly pretty effect.

With SCHIESSER lingerie, these decorative pleats give beautiful details to both day and nightwear, for example on womens panties or pajamas.
